As assessed by IEA, India will continue to maintain its top position of both, the fastest growing “market” as also “energy consumer” up till 2040. This coupled with ambitious targets of attaining 175 GW being obtained through renewable energy resources by 2022 & another 100 GW in the next 5 years up to 2027, numerous challenges related to grid management crop up and need to be addressed.
The challenges
These challenges are technology intensive and include adaptation of the following, to effectively manage grid with high volumes of renewables:-
- Capability to handle erratic nature of power from renewables
- Advanced forecasting techniques
- Weather
- Generation
- Demand
- Supply & demand balancing through advanced analytics & visualisation
- Dynamic pricing
- Smart meters/ IoT devices
- Telemetry network to reduce T&D losses
- Assets with high ramp-up rates
- Enhancing transmission capacity
What are we doing?
- Government is going to seek bids for 5 GW of offshore wind energy projects.
- Boost Roof Top solar projects.
- Obtain global bids for 20 GW solar projects, from companies who will set up manufacturing facilities in India – an investment potential of 3 trillion dollars.
Futuristic Thinking
Energy storage technology to be boosted.
- The storage system to be made compulsory for projects beyond laid down capacities.
